A survey conducted in the United States by MarketWatch among 1,000 motorists highlights the extent to which Google Maps has become essential in the navigation applications market. We learn that out of this sample, 70% of the users surveyed use Maps, in particular to avoid speed cameras during their journeys.

As Android Central points out, navigation applications have for several years taken advantage of crowdsourcing to offer more than simple satellite guidance to their users. Through these participatory features, they are able to display traffic information in real time (traffic jams, closed roads, accidents, etc.), but also the location of certain speed cameras. It is on this point that the MarketWatch investigation focuses, as well as on the tools used by users wishing to avoid fines.

In this context, Google Maps therefore comes far ahead of competing solutions in this survey. Compared to the 70% totaled by the application of the Californian giant, Waze (although a subsidiary of Google) is only used by 27% of respondents, while Apple Plans is satisfied with 25%.

Information which is surprising when we know that iPhones are more popular in the United States than in France. It is estimated that more than half of smartphones purchased across the Atlantic are iPhones… and Apple Maps remains the default navigation application for all of these devices. The massive installation of Google Maps by iPhone users therefore sounds like a disavowal for Apple, at least if we stick to MarketWatch data.

Note that in France, current legislation does not allow navigation applications to display the location of speed cameras present on the roads. Google Maps and its competitors cannot therefore offer this functionality to their users in France. This does not prevent Google Maps and Waze from dominating the French market, with respectively 36 and 14.5 million users each month in 2019, according to Médiamétrie.
