It was almost 10 years ago, in 2014, Google launched its very first Chromecast. Launched at only 35 euros, this mysterious HDMI key (it was its form at the time) was going to launch a new range of products from the American giant, which has obviously not stopped evolving since.
In this month of May 2023, Google formalizes the end of support for this same first generation Chromecast. In other words, the firm will no longer deploy any update for its device, whose performance should gradually deteriorate.
Performance that will degrade over time
It’s official since today, the November 2022 update of the first generation Chromecast (1.36.159268) was therefore the very last update dedicated to this amazing HDMI key. At the time, it was already the first update for over three years.
Remember that the first generation Chromecast is a small HDMI key that connects directly to a television, all powered by a micro-USB cable to be connected to the back of the key. On board, there was a total of 2 GB of storage and 512 MB of RAM, and it made it possible to transform any TV with an HDMI port into a connected TV.
Be careful however, the end of support does not mean the immediate death of the Chromecast. The latter will continue to work, but it will gradually become obsolete as software evolves. Unlike many Google products, this very first Chromecast can boast of having benefited from a follow-up of (almost) 10 years, which is a small feat for the American giant.
