Google Photos

The Mountain View giant offers a whole new Google Photos update for Android which is particularly aimed at image purists. These users will notice in the patch notes for the Android version of the application that now, “the photos in RAW format that they capture will appear in the Photos view and will now be saved automatically “. To benefit from this new functionality, they will have togo to the “Raw” menu of the appand activate automatic backup of images taken in this format.

THE pro or semi-pro photographers usually work with the RAW image format. The latter “contains the raw sensor data and the parameters necessary for transformation into an image file visible on screen”. It is thanks to all this data that advanced users can change exposure settings, ISO sensitivity or even the white balance of their images. So much information takes up a lot of space. We therefore consider that at equivalent definition (for the same image size), the RAW format can occupy up to six times more space than a JPEG format file.

Google Photos finally stores and displays images in RAW format

Although users most often seek to reduce the size and weight of their images, many smartphones still offer the ability to capture photographs without losing or compressing data. Until now, when Google Photos imported images contained in an Android smartphone, it did not take into account these images which can weigh several tens of megabytes.
