Google’s Pixel 8 series may not have much to teach us when it is released. After revealing the very likely configuration of smartphones in the field of photography, Android Authority – which claims to draw its information from a person working at Google – publishes a new chapter in its soap opera. Our American colleagues today provide an overview of the screens that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro should be equipped with when they are expected to launch in the fall.
Brighter screens
New features are to be expected on the two smartphones, whose panels should be supplied by both Samsung Display and BOE (for the Pixel 8 only). According to media sources, it is the Pixel 8 that would benefit from the bulk of the innovations to be expected. Its panel, still Oled, would swap the 6.31-inch diagonal of the Pixel 7 for a 6.17-inch format, which suggests increased compactness. This screen, which should remain flat, would win on several counts. First, its maximum brightness, which Android Authority sources estimate will reach 1400 nits (in HDR), compared to 1000 nits for the Pixel 7: good news for enjoying videos on the device. The maximum refresh rate would increase from 90 to 120 Hz, thus aligning with that of the Pixel Pro. The definition of the panel, maintained at 1080 x 2400 pixels despite a smaller diagonal, would allow it to gain a slightly higher resolution, 427 dpi.
Say goodbye to curved edges
The Pixel 8 Pro would be in line with its predecessor. It would sport a 6.7-inch screen instead of the Pixel 7 Pro’s 6.71-inch, and gain a maximum brightness of 1600 nits in HDR, compared to 1400 nits for the 7 Pro. Its resolution would drop slightly, however, from 512 dpi to 490 dpi, due to a definition increased from 1440 x 3120 pixels to 1344 x 2992 pixels. It will nevertheless retain the maximum refresh rate of the 7 Pro, of 120 Hz. The real change that we will remember, however, concerns an ergonomic point: the Pixel 8 Pro will probably have a flat screen, and not a curved panel on the sides, as is the case with the Pixel 6 Pro and 7 Pro.
