Google wants to help you sort through your (too) many cat photos

A new feature is coming to Google Photos. The latter should allow you to put some order into your image gallery.

If you tend to take the same photo 12 times and then sort it “later”, then Google has good news for you. The search giant’s cloud photo storage service now offers a feature allowing you to group similar photos together so as not to pollute your photo feed. As a bonus, this duplicate detection feature also allows you to quickly clean up your photos.

“Stack” arrives to bring order

Called “Stack” (for “stacking” in French), this functionality is currently being deployed. On Reddit, a Google Photos user was asked to activate the option, which means that the company is gradually rolling out the tool to all Internet users using the service. Spotted in the code of the Android application last month, Stack is finally officially arriving in mid-November.

The operation of the tool is very simple. Once your photos are uploaded to the service, Google will automatically analyze your photos to group those that are similar into a pile. So, if you have taken 6 photos of your cat stretching, the application will only show one in the photo timeline (a priori the “best”) and will stick a small icon to it indicating that other similar photos are “hidden” behind the one displayed.

A good way to save storage

By then clicking on the cover photo, you will be able to see the other photos grouped by Google in the stack. Within the stack, you can decide to “ungroup” the photos if you don’t like the arrangement operated by Google, change the top photo in the stack or even keep only the best photos and automatically delete all the others. This last option should be particularly practical if you lack storage space to accommodate all your photos on Google Photos.

You can check if the feature has been deployed to your Google account by going to Google Photos settingssection ” Preferences “. The lucky ones will see the option appear in the menu, alongside those allowing you to group similar faces or display “memories” above the photo grid. Don’t panic if your mobile doesn’t yet offer you the option, its deployment is gradual and should arrive in the coming weeks on all smartphones equipped with Google Photos. A bit of patience.
