Greenland: why was this film not released in theaters in the United States?


On the occasion of the first free-to-air broadcast of the film Greenland on Sunday September 11, 2022, from 9:05 p.m. on TF1, Télé Star explains why this feature film was not finally released in theaters in the USA.

Released in French cinemas in 2020, the film entitled Greenland, worn by Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, Scott GlennKing Bach and David Denman, will be broadcast for the first time unencrypted on French television on Sunday September 11, 2022, from 9:05 p.m. on TF1. Directed by Ric Roman Waughthis feature film features the character of John Garretty, portrayed on screen by Gerard Butler. The latter is a building engineer from Atlanta who has marital problems with his wife Allison, interpreted by Morena Baccarin. Both try to hide the situation from their diabetic son Nathan, who wants to see the passage of Clarke, an interstellar comet composed of thousands of fragments, and which will approach extremely close to the Earth.

However, it turns out that Comet Clarke is on a collision course with Earth when one of its main fragments reduces the city of Tampa to ashes, and the shock wave is felt thousands of miles away. The worst is yet to come: the main fragments will destroy the Earth within 48 hours. John learns that he has been selected to join an emergency shelter, but at the military base where he is to leave, he is separated from his family when his son is rejected because of his diabetes. Then begins a struggle to survive and find themselves in the midst of the collapse of civilization, before leaving for the last refuge of humanity: Greenland.

If this film was released in French cinemas on August 5, 2020, on the other hand, it was not exploited on the circuit of the American rooms. As a reminder, it was in March 2019 that STX Entertainment acquired the distribution rights to the film. Its theatrical release in the United States was originally scheduled for June 12, 2020, but was postponed several times due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The theatrical release of the feature film was ultimately cancelled, while the company has set a video-on-demand release for October 13, 2020. before pushing it back to December 18, 2020.
