GTA 5: part of the source code is mysteriously found on the web

Clearly, someone has a grudge against Rockstar Games. After the massive GTA 6 hack last September, some of the source code for GTA 5 mysteriously ended up on the web. The studio has done what is necessary to make these lines of code disappear as quickly as possible.

This will probably bring back bad memories at Rockstar. After the massive hack that hit GTA 6 in September 2022, we just learned thatpart of the GTA 5 source code has just mysteriously ended up on Reddit and GitHub.

The studio reacted quickly to stop the bleeding and remove his lines of code asserting their copyrights with DMCA swipes. However, the Internet being the Internet, some malicious users have had the time to copy certain lines and offer them for illegal downloading.

From what we know, the code in question is a script function string including references to certain game elements such as the camera, the graphics, the cutscenes, the interface or even the management of fire and gangs. Some lines of code concerning the anti-cheat system of GTA 5 would also be affected by this leak.

But where does this GTA 5 source code leak come from?

Of course, this case raises a question: does this leak stem from the recent GTA 6 hack perpetrated by this 17-year-old Brit? Recall that the hackers had claimed at the time to have stolen the source codes of GTA 6, but also of GTA 5. Only, following the investigation and the arrest of the young hacker, the authorities confirmed that there was no proof that those responsible for the leak were actually in possession of these elements.

Two possibilities are then available to us: either these parts of the source code relate to old versions of the game, or they come directly from the historical hack that targeted Rockstar in September 2022. For the moment, we are assuming and we will have to wait for a possible statement from the studio to find out more. Remember, however, that at the end of October 2022, Rockstar mysteriously removed 95% of the anti-cheat systems from GTA 5. According to several journalists, the studio would have done so to thoroughly review the code of its anti-cheat protections. What therefore confirms that part of the source code of GTA 5 dedicated to anti-cheat systems has indeed found its way into the wild.
