Like every year, Google has given a small name that is both gourmet and melting to its new Android, and in 2024, it will be the year of the “V”.
For many years now, Google has had fun giving code names by following an alphabetical and culinary logic.
Android, cakes and letters
Google’s Android mobile ecosystem has been available for almost 15 years. Each year, the American giant took care to offer a major update to its famous OS, and until 2018, Google took pleasure in baptizing each new version according to a dessert, while following an alphabetical logic.
In 2009, Google notably offered the 1.5 Cupcake update, which was followed by Android 2.0 Eclair, then came Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean… In 2018, Android 9.0 Pie closed the tradition , the new versions of Android having since adopted a more classic numbering, in the style of iOS.
2024, the year of the “V” at Android
Despite everything, if the latest versions of Android no longer have a name with a sweet tendency, each version retains an internal code name which comes to perpetuate the tradition set up in 2009. Android 13 was for example baptized “Tiramisu” internally. Regarding Android 14, Google had to organize itself around the letter “U”, resulting in “Upside Down Cake”. For Android 15, the deal is easier, with a code name that must start this time with the letter “V”.
For 2024 and the presumed release of Android 15, it looks like Google has already ordered the dessert, as Mishaal Rahman shared on Twitter.
Thus, the future version of Android should be called “Vanilla Ice Cream”. Of course, the code name generally does not reveal much about what this future version of Android will offer, which will abandon this same name when it is publicly available, to be renamed more soberly in Android 15.
