She did not specify the content, but mentioned that it was content intended for children. Saudi state broadcaster Al Ekhbariya TV, in a broadcast dealing with the issue, showed blurry animation clips that appeared to show two girls kissing.
The statement from the Riyadh-based General Audiovisual Media Commission said the content violated media regulations in the Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahren, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait.
If Netflix continued to stream the content, “the necessary legal steps would be taken,” he said, without giving further details.
Netflix did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The United Arab Emirates issued a similarly worded statement on Netflix content on Tuesday, saying it would monitor what the platform airs in the coming days and “evaluate its commitment to controlling broadcast” in the country.
Same-sex relationships are criminalized in many Muslim-majority nations and films depicting such relationships have in the past been banned by regulators in those countries, while films containing profanity or the use of illicit drugs are sometimes censored.
Earlier this year, the United Arab Emirates and other Muslim states banned the theatrical screening of Walt Disney-Pixar’s animated feature “Lightyear” because it depicts characters in a same-sex relationship.
