Gwyneth Paltrow: Co-parenting with Chris Martin

Gwyneth Paltrow, 51, is grateful for a well-functioning co-parenting relationship with ex-husband Chris Martin, 46. “He has this sweet, childlike spirit,” enthuses the actress and entrepreneur in conversation with “People” from the father of her children Apple, 19, and Moses, 17. “I love that he just says ‘Let’s jump in the sea’ when it’s 15 degrees or ‘Let’s go to that weird guitar shop’. He always wants to do these little fun adventures and activities with them.”

The Coldplay frontman has a “real warmth. And he brings that into the way he raises his children.” Martin travels a lot and tours, but when he’s there it’s “almost as if he came and sprinkled fairy dust.”

Paltrow sought advice from children of divorce

It was important to Paltrow and Martin to make their children a priority after the separation. It is also important for them to continue to maintain a close relationship with each other, explains Paltrow: When she talked to friends and family during her divorce, she discovered that for many children of divorce, the divorce wasn’t really the bad thing. It was much worse when the parents no longer spoke to each other or did not appear together at important events.

“Those were the things that really hurt the kids,” Paltrow said. “So Chris and I said, ‘Let’s never do that and let’s try to put the hard part behind us and remember our friendship.'” The two are proud to have achieved exactly that. Paltrow sums up: “He’s like my family.”

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin married in December 2003. They announced their separation in March 2014 and divorced in 2016. Paltrow is now married to TV producer Brad Falchuk, and Martin has long been in a relationship with actress Dakota Johnson, 34.
