Hair care: 5 myths about washing hair – what’s the truth?

There is a lot of wisdom circulating about how to wash your hair properly. But which of these are true and which are based on error? We clarify.

There are many things we can do wrong when it comes to hair care – washing our hair too much or too little. Being too generous with shampoo and co. or too stingy. And only then the right water temperature! But which myths about washing hair are actually true – and which ones can we safely forget? We take a look at the most popular ones.

What are the 5 most common hair washing myths?

1. Washing your hair every day makes it greasy faster

Let’s start with one of the most popular pseudo-truths about hair. Washing your hair every day makes it greasy faster. That’s wrong. Because we cannot influence how quickly the sebaceous glands of our scalp become greasy by washing. The production of sebum is hormonal.

2. Washing with too hot water damages the hair

That’s actually true. Water that is too hot robs our hair of moisture and makes it brittle. It can also irritate and dry out the scalp. It is therefore better to only use lukewarm water – it is gentler on the hair.

3. Rinsing with cold water gives hair more shine

Speaking of water temperature: According to the next myth, after washing, we should rinse our hair with cold water – this should make it shine more. And indeed: the cold water closes the cuticle of the hair. They reflect the light better and shine more intensely. Positive side effect: The cold shower stimulates our blood circulation and can strengthen our immune system.

4. Brushing wet hair breaks it

Here’s the answer: It depends. What’s true: Wet hair is more sensitive than dry hair – so we should always handle it carefully to avoid hair breakage. But with a wide-toothed comb, we can gently comb through them.

Is your hair very sticky after washing it? Then you should definitely comb them beforehand and use a conditioner after shampooing. And: If you have very dry and damaged hair and don’t want to stress it further, you can untangle it with just your fingers after washing.

5. Repair shampoos can fix split ends

Many shampoos promise us the blue of the sky. Repair shampoos for particularly stressed hair, for example, want to be able to heal split ends. Unfortunately, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Unfortunately, once the ends of the hair are split, the only thing that helps is cutting them off. They can no longer be repaired.
