In view of the church’s most recent abuse scandals, Harald Schmidt is not thinking of leaving. But on the contrary.
Leaving the church is out of the question for Harald Schmidt (64). This was presented by the cabaret artist, show player and moderator according to a preliminary report to the “Stern”.. Even the latest abuse scandal in the Catholic Church doesn’t change that.
Schmidt is said to have pointed out that church scandals have not just been around since today and referred to the burnings caused by the Inquisition. However, the scandals are only one side of the institution. “In my view, one cannot leave the Catholic faith,” the newspaper quoted him as saying.
Revelations are horrific
Nonetheless, Schmidt said that the revelations about sexual abuse by Catholic priests were horrible and had to be prosecuted with all consequences. However, he knows many “fantastic priests” or “great hospitals that are run by Catholic orders”. He considers it his task to strengthen the positive side of the church.
The number of people leaving the church has risen rapidly since a report on abuse in the Archdiocese of Munich in January weighed heavily on high-ranking church officials.
