December 2022 started with temperatures in the range of the long-term mean from 1991 to 2020. After that it stayed cold for a few days with a few ice days, i.e. temperatures below zero all day, even in the lowlands.

If we had taken stock on December 15th, the average temperature would have been 1 to 3 degrees below normal, especially on the north side of the Alps. With the onset of heat in the last few days and the expected temperatures by the end of the year, however, the balance is being reversed. December 2022 is expected to end with a 0.5 to 1.5 degree excess compared to the 1991 to 2020 norm.
