It is the oldest and certainly the least expensive of all energy sources. Wood burns, in its various forms, in the chimney of one out of three houses in France; not to mention certain rare apartments where the hearth still fires. In total, millions of French people use wood fire as their main or supplementary source of heating, so much so that France ranks first among European countries that use wood as a source of energy.
