The name already says that lemonade has something to do with lemon. The predecessor of lemonade probably originated in ancient Egypt, the so-called kashkab (made from barley, mint, rue, black pepper and lemon juice). The Jewish community in medieval Egypt often enjoyed a lemon drink called “Qatarmizat”. Lemon was considered an expensive treat up until the 1600s. From the 17th century, lemon cultivation became more organized and mass imports began. Lemonades were first drunk in Italy, from where the fashion spread to Paris around 1630. The drink became so popular that the first lemonade vendors’ union was founded in 1676. Lemonade also played an important role in defeating the plague. The lemon peel and the limonene contained in it killed the fleas that transmitted the disease from rats to humans. Lemonade arrived in America in the 18th century.
