Helped in times of plague – lemonade: the same recipe for a thousand years

Lemon juice, water and sugar, this is how lemonade is made. If you want to know what’s behind the refreshing drink, you’ve come to the right place.

The name already says that lemonade has something to do with lemon. The predecessor of lemonade probably originated in ancient Egypt, the so-called kashkab (made from barley, mint, rue, black pepper and lemon juice). The Jewish community in medieval Egypt often enjoyed a lemon drink called “Qatarmizat”. Lemon was considered an expensive treat up until the 1600s. From the 17th century, lemon cultivation became more organized and mass imports began. Lemonades were first drunk in Italy, from where the fashion spread to Paris around 1630. Vendors would walk around with containers on their backs, selling the drink made from lemon juice, water and honey. The drink became so popular that the first lemonade vendors’ union was founded in 1676. Lemonade also played an important role in defeating the plague. The lemon peel and the limonene contained in it killed the fleas that transmitted the disease from rats to humans. Lemonade arrived in America in the 18th century. The most famous lemonades, from Fanta to Sprite, were made here. Lemonade is also often used instead of alcohol, which shows: All in all, lemonade is something extremely useful.APS glass carafe for water and lemonade, glass container 10 x 26 cm with stainless steel lid and double function, spout with integrated sieve, 1.5 liters23.74€ Click here for the carafe.Artcome 65 ounce large heat-resistant water carafe with stainless steel lid, borosilicate glass beverage jug glass jug with lid19.99€Click here for the carafe.CNNIK glass carafe 1.5 liter water jug Heat-resistant borosilicate glassglass jug with natural bamboo lid, water carafe also suitable for the refrigerator19.99€Click here for the glass jug .Glass jug Glass jug Glass carafe for water Lemonade with lid Handle fridge-safe 1.5l10.90€Click here for the glass carafe.Fanta Berry / berries24 x 355 ml incl. 6.00 euros DPG deposit44.95€Click here for the cans.Sprite, maximal Refreshment with lime and lemon flavor in stylish cans, soda, ONE-WAY can (24 x 330ml)31.38€Click here for the cans.24 cans San Pellegrino Limone and Menta a 0.33L inc. €6.00 DISPOSABLE lemonade lime + mint€48.95Click here for the cans.Lemonades homemade – less sugar, real taste: the best recipes with natural ingredients€8.22Click here for the book.Lemonades, iced teas & barrel showers: Original Recipes100% handmade refreshment – Instructions illustrated with photos, from Stiftung Warentest€17.37Click here for the book. You can find more product recommendations in our comparison portal, current offers and discounts can be found in our voucher portal.
