Here is the best spread (and among the cheapest!) according to 60 million consumers

For its latest special issue, the magazine of the 60 million consumers association analyzed around a hundred low-cost products. Among them, a spread that ranks among the best on the market.

In times of inflation, sales of low-cost products soar. And for good reason: according to the magazine 60 million consumerswho looked at the subject in his latest special issue, these private label (or private label) products are on average a third cheaper than those of major national brands. Our colleagues analyzed the quality of 110 products, and noted the efforts of major brands to improve them. They thus discovered a spread with very good value for money, which allows you to treat yourself to a treat without breaking the bank. In February 2020, the magazine had already designated a spread with good points (no palm oil, a good sugar/fat balance and good taste), but which came from a major national brand.

The magazine, however, gives an alarming observation: all the spreads tested have a sugar content of more than 50%. Among the bad performers, Carrefour’s Simpl spread, which contains more than 66%. Another key ingredient in the spread: oil. And especially palm oil, which remains the most used although it has been criticized for years for its harmful impact on the environment and health. And although hazelnuts feature prominently on jars of spreads, their presence remains very low in the composition, because they are very expensive. Some mixtures nevertheless contain 2% hazelnut powder.

Lidl spread, the best low-cost spread

So, who is the big winner of the first prize spreads? According to our colleagues, this is the Choco Nussa from Lidl. A 400 gram jar costs 1.85 euros, which amounts half the price of the leading national brand, with a hazelnut content peaking at 13%. The chocolate used is also Rainforest Alliance certified, which certifies sustainable production. Be careful though: with an average of 500 calories per 100 grams, the spread remains a rich food, not to be consumed every day. For breakfast, it is better to opt for an oilseed puree (such as almond puree) without added sugars, which helps to better regulate your glucose level, while benefiting from the intake of proteins and healthy fats. .
