Wondering which of your household appliances consumes the most? Here is the ranking. This will allow you to control your energy bill.

While the energy crisis has forced around thirty swimming pools to close in France, due to rising energy prices, what could be more useful than knowing how to lower your energy bill? And for this, it is necessary to know which of our household appliances consume the most. And the gold medal goes… to the fridge and the freezer! Together, these devices consume nearly 346kWh per year, which represents almost a quarter of household energy consumption. Of course, it all depends on the model. Anyway, its consumption should oscillate between 200 and 500kWh. So imagine if you have several. As for the freezer, don’t forget to defrost it properly: if this is not the case, it may consume more energy.

Although installed in second place, the dryer follows closely. It would consume about 300kWh per year. According to ADEME (Environment and Energy Management Agency), it could even reach 350kWh per year. The washing machine would be at 191kWh per year, according to the RTE (Electricity transport network). Obviously, the dishwasher is also particularly energy-intensive (240kWh per year or around 45 euros), the electric hotplates (236kWh) but also the oven (130kWh). By comparison, an electric heater consumes 3,800kWh per year, so that’s probably where you should start if you want to see your energy bill go down.

What solutions to reduce your consumption?

If major household appliances consume too much, it can sometimes be difficult to use them less. Indeed, it is impossible to unplug your refrigerator and freezer when there are fresh products inside.

However, small everyday appliances are more easily unplugged. Even if you don’t use them, some objects still use electricity, so don’t hesitate. The coffee machine, for example, is easy to unplug. The kettle too, the microwave, the toaster, the Wi-Fi box or simply your computer!
