here is the list of products that saw their prices explode in 2023 (and counting)

In its 17th Price Observatory, Familles Rurales reveals the exorbitant price of an organic basket to feed a family of 4 people. The prices of certain healthy products have exploded and it’s not over…

This Tuesday, January 23, Rural Families publishes his 17th Price Observatory. And the observation is simple: eating healthily is really not economical. Indeed, the year 2023 was marked by high inflation, particularly in the food sector. And many healthy products have seen their prices explode. This is the case, for example, of carrots whose price increased by 40.6% ! But also from mackerel (+24.8%), semi-skimmed milk, olive oil And rice the increase of which is around +20%.

A difficult observation, since overall, eating healthy, namely “eat in accordance with the recommendations of the National Nutrition and Health Plan (PNNS)”, costs not less than 539 euros per person. And we must count 1297 euros for a family of 4 people. Indeed, Rural Families indicates that a varied basket for a family of 4 people costs 810 euros per month, if it is composed of economical products. Otherwise, you have to count 901 euros for national brand products, and 1297 euros for the organic basket.

10.8 million people in food insecurity

In this number, Rural Family indicates that this price increase plunges 16% of the French population, or 10.8 million people, are food insecure, according to the latest figures published by CREDOC in May 2023. “Requests addressed to specialized associations such as food banks have exploded in recent months,” noted Rural Families. This increase in prices has therefore pushed many families to change their eating habits and not in a good way.

To help the most modest households, Emmanuelle Macron had promised an inflation check. But after years of waiting, Bruno Le Maire finally announced that there would be no food check. The Minister of the Economy, however, affirmed that prices in the food sector would fall in 2024. “Last year, when there was a commercial negotiation, there was a 15% price increase. Today, we are more around 5%. It’s still too much,” he declared in Sunday in politics, on France 3, on January 7. “You will have price reductions on butter, on oils, on certain products such as poultry, on certain meats, not simply stabilization,” assures the minister. Before qualifying:It is not a question of returning to pre-crisis prices. It will not arrive”.
