Shiffrin delivers another record race

Mikaela Shiffrin is the most successful female skier in the history of her sport. So that it stays that way for a long time, the American continues to saddle up new records on top of her previous records. In the home of skiing idol Hermann Maier, she has now overtaken another dominator from previous years.

Mikaela Shiffrin won the Flachau floodlit slalom and once again wrote a piece of skiing history. The American celebrated her 68th success in the World Cup on Tuesday evening, leaving Austria's Marcel Hirscher behind in the all-time list of the best. She also celebrated her 100th place on the podium and, with 44 slalom successes, holds the most victories in a discipline in women's history.

"I certainly didn't think of records today," said Shiffrin. "I just wanted to ski strong and inspiring. It was really fun today. I had so much energy built up and it came out in the second run." In an exciting competition she relegated Katharina Liensberger to second place by 0.19 seconds and prevented the Austrian from winning the first World Cup. Third place went to the Swiss Wendy Holdener (+0.43), who still has to wait for her first slalom success.

Germany's best technician Lena Dürr could not quite continue the upward trend of the past few weeks and was eleven (+2.91) – most recently she was eighth in Zagreb. "In the second run I tried to attack. I succeeded well, but I lost my momentum a bit at the bottom," said the athlete from Germering. If she had been three and a half tenths of a second faster, she could have been happy about sixth place.

The biggest ski party in the Women's World Cup usually takes place in front of up to 15,000 fans on the Herrmann-Maier slope – but this time there was no spectator spectacle due to Corona. In the last slalom before the World Cup in Cortina d'Ampezzo in February, Shiffrin and Liensberger showed a show with a better ending for the American in the final. She now only has Ingemar Stenmark (86) and her ex-teammate Lindsey Vonn (82) in front of her in the all-time winner list. Meanwhile, the Slovak Petra Vlhova, who was only fourth, defended her top position in the slalom and overall standings.
