Holiday traffic – the traffic jam in front of the Gotthard tunnel has cleared – News

  • The traffic jam in front of the Gotthard north portal on the A2 motorway cleared up on Saturday evening.
  • By midday, a traffic jam had formed 16 kilometers long.

Early on Saturday morning, shortly after 6 a.m., the traffic service had registered a 15-kilometer long column of cars heading south in front of the Gotthard tunnel.

In the afternoon, cars were also backed up in the opposite direction, between Quinto (TI) and the Gotthard tunnel, at times over a length of six kilometers. Here, travelers had to expect a waiting time of around an hour, as the TCS announced.

More traffic jams expected

The TCS expects more traffic towards Italy for the holiday season in July, especially between Friday and Monday. The TCS reports that traffic jams would easily exceed the ten-kilometer mark these days. He also predicts waiting times on the A13, the San Bernardino route.

As early as Friday, the southbound traffic jam had grown to twelve kilometers, as TCS announced via Twitter. Last Saturday and Sunday the tin snake had grown to 15 kilometers in length in the afternoon.

Unbroken traffic jam records

The longest traffic jam so far in 2023 occurred at the Gotthard north portal on the Pentecost weekend, when the tin column of cars and trucks temporarily grew to a length of 20 kilometers. So far, no traffic jam records have been broken this year.

Last year, at Easter, Viasuisse measured the second longest traffic jam since the Gotthard tunnel opened in 1980. At that time, a traffic jam of 22 kilometers combined with a waiting time of three and a half hours was recorded on Good Friday. This was only surpassed in 1998. At that time, the onset of winter caused around 25 kilometers of traffic jams.
