Many popular toy franchises have been adapted for the cinema in recent years. Now there is also a film about Play-Doh clay to come.
Whether “Transformers”, “GI Joe – Secret Mission Cobra”, “Battleship”, “The Lego Movie”, “Power Rangers” or most recently “Playmobil: The Movie”: In recent years numerous popular toy franchises have been brought to life in cinemas. Most of these film adaptations were panned by critics. But at the box office they knew how to convince everyone.
And as things stand at the moment, the toy manufacturer Hasbro, from which the Transformers come, among other things, now wants to continue riding this wave of success. As Deadline reports, the toy manufacturer is planning a film about Play-Doh’s clay products.

Hasbro is making a film about Play-Doh clay
Not much is known about the “Play-Doh” cinema adaptation. So far, the only thing that is certain is that it will be an animated film. Jon M. Chu is on board as producer. He recently directed the musical “In the Height” and the romantic comedy “Crazy Rich”. But Chu also has experience in adapting toys. So he already shot the sequel “GI Joe – The Reckoning”. According to Deadline, Chu is likely to direct the Play-Doh movie as well. But that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Emily V. Gordon is set to write the screenplay for the “Play-Doh” film. Her best-known project to date is the comedy The Big Sick, which she co-wrote. However, there are no details about the story of the “Play-Doh” film yet.
In addition to Play-Doh: More toy films planned
However, Play-Doh is far from the only toy that will be produced for the cinema screen in the near future. An animated series based on the fantasy card game “Magic: The Gathering” is scheduled to appear on the Netflix streaming platform in 2022. At the beginning of March 2023, “Dungeons & Dragons”, a film about the pen & paper role-playing game of the same name, will be released in cinemas. Featuring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page and Hugh Grant, among others.
Another “Transformers” live action film is also planned for June 2023. An animated in-universe spin-off is set to follow in July 2024. So far, the six “Transformers” parts have taken around 4.8 billion US dollars at the box office. Another “Power Ranger” film and series are also in the pipeline. And then with “Ouija”, “Cluedo” and “Mouse Trap” a number of board games are to be adapted for the cinema. On the other hand, a series is to be made from the well-known strategy game “Risk”.
