Hologram phone calls like “Star Wars”: 3D video chats will soon be possible on smartphones

Video calls in 3D, with holograms like in the “Star Wars” films – you won’t have to go to the cinema for that anymore. This should also work with your smartphone soon.

  • According to the German network providers, 3D telephone calls should soon be possible via smartphones.
  • The basis for the new technology is the new high-speed 5G data network.
  • However, to see your counterpart in the video chat as a 3D hologram, you will need VR glasses.

Do you want to see your grandma as a 3D hologram like Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars movies? This is no longer a dream of the future because it is fundamentally technically possible – and according to Deutsche Telekom, it will soon be mass-compatible in Germany.

The mobile operators Telekom, Vodafone, Telefonica and Orange want to enable futuristic communication via the new 5G data network. All that should be needed for this is a mobile phone and VR glasses. An artificial intelligence then processes the images from the cell phone’s front cameras into 3D representations in space.

The merger of the providers for the joint development of the technology is probably necessary for cross-network functionality of hologram telephony: “We are testing this together with the other mobile phone companies, because holographic telephone calls should work with all connections,” announced Telekom in a joint press release with the other providers.

Also interesting…

From when exactly the solution for 3D calls technically implemented by the tech startup Matsuko should actually work on your smartphones, however, is not yet clear from the announcement by the mobile network operators.
