SPD leader calls for the right to mobile work

The home office has become enormously important during the corona pandemic and has changed the working world of many people. SPD chairwoman Esken now wants to anchor the right to flexible workplace models on a permanent basis.

For the time after Corona, the SPD is pushing for a legal right for employees to work from home for part of the annual working hours. “Basically, employees should be able to work at least 24 days a year with a five-day week on the move or in the home office, if the activity allows,” says party chairman Saskia Esken of the “Augsburger Allgemeine”.

“While some can hardly wait to get back to the office at last, others have recognized for themselves that they can work more effectively and better in the home office,” says Esken. She emphasizes that a legal regulation is necessary for this. Working hours and rest times should also apply in the home office and a right to non-availability times. “A flexible working environment also includes flexible workplace models,” says the SPD chairwoman.

According to a survey presented by the consulting company EY in mid-May, most employees want to work from home even after the Corona crisis. According to this, 38 percent only want to go to the office three to four times a week, and 36 percent only want to go to the office once or twice. 7 percent stated that they want to work exclusively from home. Conversely, 19 percent of those surveyed do not want to work from home (anymore) in the future if they have their way.
