What exactly does new moon mean?
When the moon is between the sun and the earth, we call it a new moon. The moon phase is, so to speak, the counterpart to the full moon, during which the earth stands between the moon and the sun. At the new moon, we only see the side of our satellite that is not illuminated, i.e. in the shadow, from the earth – which usually means that we cannot see anything. Even on very clear nights you can occasionally make out a dull pane in the sky, but in order to perceive it, we would have to look carefully and ideally also know where the moon is in the sky. Around 35 hours after the new moon, the satellite slowly becomes visible again as a sickle. As with the full moon, there are about 29.5 days between two new moon phases.
At least two and at most five times a year at the new moon, the moon is at the level of the earth’s orbit, the so-called ecliptic, and then covers part of the sun – or all of it. If this is the case, we speak of a solar eclipse, whereby we differentiate between a partial (part of the sun covered) and total (sun completely covered). This event can only be seen in a certain region, as the moon’s shadow only covers a small part of the earth’s surface. In one and the same place there are many years between two solar eclipses, and even more between two total eclipses. As a rule, a solar eclipse follows a lunar eclipse, i.e. it takes place about two weeks afterwards. In October there is no solar eclipse at the new moon.
