“House of the Dragon” returns to a location we already know from “Game of Thrones”: the stepping stones. These play an important role in the GoT spin-off as they represent one of the main trade routes to Westeros.
The fact that these are now being taken by the crab feeder Craghas Drahar is particularly annoying for Corlys Velaryon. The Velaryon family fortune is dependent on Corlys’ sea trade.
House of the Dragon: The Making of the Stepping Stones
The Stepping Stones are an island chain made up of a dozen small islands. They are located in the Southern Narrow Sea, east of Dorne and west of the Disputed Lands. The stepping stones form the transition between the strait in the north and the summer sea in the south.
Originally, the Stepping Stones were the arm of Dorne that connected Westeros and Essos. To prevent the First Men from spreading further across Westeros, the Children of the Forest and the Greenseers destroyed the arm with magic, leaving only the fragments that are today’s Stepping Stones.
The meaning of the stepping stones in “House of the Dragon” – spoiler alert!
Daemon Targaryen and Corlys Velaryon team up to retake the Stepping Stones and drive out the Crab Eater in episode 2 of “House of the Dragon.” The leader of the Triarchy, an army of the Free Cities of Lys, Myr and Tyrosh, has settled with his men on the Stepping Stones and is demanding incredibly high tolls. Anyone who can’t pay is fed to the crabs.
Daemon begins a war on the stepping stones with the support of Corlys. The war culminates in a duel between Cragha’s crab-eater and Daemon, in which the crab-eater is beheaded by Daemon. After the victory, Daemon proclaims himself King of the Stepping Stones and the Narrow Sea, since he has no hope of winning the Iron Throne anyway.
