House of the Dragon: What happens after Otto Hohenturm’s dismissal?

After his betrayal of the crown and his attempts to sully the honor of Rhaenyra, Viserys I decides to dismiss Otto Hohenturm from the post of Hand of the King in the fourth episode “House of the Dragon”. A decision that has many consequences.

Otto Hohenturm looks back on many years as the Hand of the King. He served House Targaryen during the reign of King Jaehaerys. After the anointing of Viserys I as the new king, he retained his post and was now in his service.

When Visery’s wife Aemma died, Otto seized the opportunity and urged his daughter Alicent to marry the king. After he was able to bring his own child to power in this way, he now planned for his grandson to take power.

But before Aegon II was born, Viserys had made his eldest child Rhaenyra heir to the throne. Young Targaryen stands in the way of the crown of Aegon. In order to get rid of her, Otto has her spied on and tracked.

This action will cost him his post. After nasty rumors about her, Rhaenyra was able to convince her father that Otto is not to be trusted. Despite his dismissal, Otto will not let his plans rest.

Like Littlefinger aka Petyr Baelish, Otto will operate from the shadows and continue to pursue his plans. Thanks to his resignation, perhaps even more perfidiously than before.

Who will be Otto’s successor?

Georg RR Martin’s book “Feuer und Blut” reveals that Lord Lyonel Kraft will take Otto’s post. He is a trusted member of the Small Council. Lyonel was the one who advised the king to marry Rhaenyra to Laenor Velaryon for political purposes.

With his unselfish advice, Lyonel gained the king’s trust.
