How are the quarters in the year of retirement counted?

Question to an expert

How many quarters can I acquire in the year of my retirement?

In private pension plans, the validation of the quarters for retirement is not based on the time worked but on the remuneration received. Thus, to validate a quarter, it is necessary to have received remuneration equal to 150 times the gross hourly minimum wage, or 1,537.50 euros in 2021.

And so on up to 6,150 euros, which allows you to validate four quarters, regardless of the time worked during the year.

But be careful: what is valid for all the years of a professional career, including the first, is not valid for the last. In fact, the year of your retirement, even if you have earned since the 1er January more than 6,150 euros, you will not be able to validate more quarters than those separating your departure date from the 1ster January.

Thus, for a liquidation of your pension rights at 1er October, and unlike all other years, you won’t be able to post more than three quarters, even with high pay.

And if you leave on September 1, you will only be able to validate two terms for your final year. This is why, while you can liquidate your pension rights on any first day of a calendar month, each calendar quarter you start is worth finishing to add a quarter to your counter.

It may allow you to benefit from an additional premium to your basic plan.
