How Coyote accelerates to reinvent itself against Waze

Do not tell Stéphane Curtelin, the new marketing and product director of Coyote, that the activity of the French company is limited to its service to avoid radar. Although this historic solution still represents 80% of the company’s turnover, launched in 2005, Coyote has sought to diversify in recent years to counter the voracious appetite for Waze, the Israeli mobile road navigation application acquired by Google in 2013 for $1 billion.

Waze – GPS, Maps & Traffic

Waze is the reference community GPS, it allows you to establish a route and a navigation by knowing the traffic and the dangers of the road. The ultimate app for drivers!

Faced with the American giant, Stéphane Curtelin, previously worked for Huawei and LG, believes that Coyote’s strength lies in particular in “community participation in the reliability of the service”. Today, this “community”, on which the company constantly insists, has more than 5 million users in Europe. In addition to France, the company is also present in the Benelux and is currently developing in Spain and Italy. But this international expansion, as essential as it is, is not enough to fuel the growth of the SME.

An anti-theft tracer and an acceleration in B2B to move up a gear

To achieve this, Coyote notably launched a service dedicated to the recovery of stolen vehicles in 2018 following the acquisition of Traqueur. Called Coyote Secure, it is based on a box embedding GPS geolocation and low-frequency Internet of Things technologies. This is placed “secretly and discreetly in the vehicle”, so as to quickly find the stolen car. Once the technology has made it possible to precisely locate the vehicle, investigators, often former law enforcement professionals, take over to proceed with the recovery of the car. According to Coyote, this approach works because “91% of vehicles are found within 48 hours, and 93% in good condition”, says Stéphane Curtelin. Proof of the enthusiasm for this solution, 100,000 trackers have been installed in 2022.

This service is of particular interest to insurers, as nearly 134,000 vehicles were stolen in France last year, a figure up 9% according to Auto-Plus magazine. Coyote Secure thus caught the eye of Axa, which recommends this product to its policyholders to protect their vehicle. This approach is starting to pay off since this business segment now accounts for 20% of the company’s turnover. It also intends to strengthen its offer for professionals, which resulted last year in the acquisition of Ubiwan, a company specializing in geolocation and management of professional fleets. The operation should allow Coyote to move up a gear in B2B over the next few years.

In 2022, the company earned 135 million euros in revenue, compared to 120 million in 2021. As for the gross operating surplus (Ebitda), it came out at 50 million euros. This good financial momentum appeals to investors, who have tripled Coyote’s valuation in less than ten years, to 500 million euros. It is perhaps less spectacular than many of the French unicorns, which were recently honored in the new Next 40 promotion. But 18 years after its creation, the company is showing the way for nuggets of French Tech to continue to grow… without burning your wings.
