How do I add a to-do list to Slack?

How do I add a to-do list to Slack? I am often asked this question and I am always disappointed to have to answer that the function is not integrated into the service. However, there are third-party apps that can be added to your Slack workspaces to integrate to-do lists. One of these applications, called Simple Todo List, is easy to use, practical and simple to install.

There are, of course, some caveats to pay attention to. First, you need permission to add third-party apps to your Slack workspace. If you don’t have permission, you’ll need to ask your Slack admin to add the app. Second, this third-party app is not free. However, it offers a 14-day trial period. After this trial period is over, you will need to pay $3.99/month or $39.99/year for the app. Considering what you get for it, this is a bargain.

That being said, let’s install Simple Todo and see how it works.

Installing Simple Todo List

What you will need: To add this to-do list app to Slack, you’ll need a valid Slack account, the Slack app installed, and a workspace that allows you to install apps.

1. Log in to your Slack workspace

The first thing you need to do is log in to your Slack workspace. The easiest way is to log in to the web version of Slack.

2. Locate the app

Once you’ve signed in to your Slack workspace, go to the apps section on the left side of the window and type Simple Todo List in the search bar.

3. Install the app

You should see a button Add associated with the app (I already have it installed, so in my example the button Add is absent). After clicking on Addyou will be directed to the application page, where you need to click on Add in Slack. You will then have to give the application permission to access your workspace.

And that’s it for the installation.

How to use Simple Todo List

The use of Simple Todo List is very simple. The only thing you need to understand about this app is that it does not allow you to create multiple to-do lists. You have a single list and you can add as many items as you want to it.

1. Add an item to your to-do list

Let’s say you want to add “Call the William” to your to-do list. To do this, go to any Slack channel and type the following in the Message section:

/todo Call Boss

Now let’s add more elements using slash commands:

/todo Finish project X /todo Buy a gift for Olivier /todo Email collaborators /todo Sing

2. View your to-do list

After adding items to your list, you can view it using the slash command:

<pre class="code">/todo

You should see all of your to-do items (Figure 2).

3. Mark things to do

If you click on the … button associated with an item, you will see that you can either mark that item as completed or delete the task (Figure 3).

That, dear Slackers, is how you can add a very easy-to-use to-do list to Slack. Give this app a try and see if you find it worth the purchase price.
