How to protect your pet from the heat wave?

Finding anti-heat strategies is the mission of the moment. Heatwave obliges. But let's not forget our faithful companions who suffer from rising temperatures as much as we do.

One day the weather is nice, another comes down to a nameless furnace. The temperatures this summer are playing tricks on us. To experience these scorching periods with serenity, we have already given you some tips to cool off. But have you thought about your pets. With their fur, for example, how can they withstand the heat?

Dogs and cats hardly sweat, so they cannot regulate their body temperature. And exposed to heat for too long, animals can develop many disorders. The most serious being heat stroke. After having detected the signs of this disease (very strong panting and salivation, loss of consciousness, a state that varies between restlessness and depression, or even motor difficulties), it is essential to go to a veterinarian.

So take extra precautions, especially towards animals living in apartments in large urban areas.

Following the SPA, the recommendations to follow are:

-Wet your animal's paws, pads, stomach and thighs, more effective than wetting the back or head.

– Remember to change your water as often as possible, and make sure the water available is cool. When walking, don't forget to take water.

-When your sweet four-legged friend is outdoors, make sure he can get some shade.

Be careful, dogs love to bask in the sun so don't let it stay out for too long.

-Do not hesitate to play games using water. The watering jet is perfect for example, but be careful that the dog does not swallow too much water, as there is a risk of stomach twisting. There are automatic water fountains for cats and dogs, as well as cooling fans. Take your pet to the seaside (at authorized times), or near a lake / river so they can swim and cool off. Remember to wet it a little before swimming to avoid hydrocution and then rinse it with fresh water after to avoid irritation due to the salt.

The Society for the Protection of Animals similarly discloses what is prohibited to do:

-Never, never, you should leave your dog in a car. This act is horrible. Even if the vehicle is in the shade and the windows are ajar, in just a few minutes the temperature can rise and be deadly.

-No ride between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., as these are the hottest times of the day. Prefer in the morning or in the evening. The pavement of sidewalks can thus burn the pads.

-All sports activities are to be avoided. Better to focus on playful moments indoors.

– Vigilance is even clearer when the animal is old or with pathologies.
