Huawei P50 Pro & P50 Pocket official: revival without 5G and Google services

Huawei is launching three new products in Germany on Wednesday, January 26th! The Huawei P50 Pro is the manufacturer’s latest flagship, while the Huawei P50 Pocket is a new foldable for the European market. Huawei has also launched a new smartwatch, the Huawei Watch GT Runner. We take a look at all the announcements and summarize all the information about the new products for you.

  • The Huawei P50 Pro and P50 Pocket are not 5G compatible and once again lack Google services
  • We will give you the prices as soon as they are communicated by Huawei!

Huawei P50 Pro: A legend is reborn – really?

The Huawei P50 Pro comes in a single 8/256GB variant. As a new representative of the P series, it is above all a camera smartphone that introduces Huawei’s so-called “True-Form Dual-Matrix” camera, which consists of two circular islands, the so-called matrices.

The first matrix (above) consists of two main True Chroma lenses of 50 and 40 megapixels respectively. One is dedicated to color, the other is a monochrome sensor, and both together aim to capture more light and provide more detailed snapshots. Also in this main matrix is a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture, but its field of view is not specified. The lens is also capable of capturing macro shots up to 2.5cm from the subject.

The second matrix of the camera module is dedicated to the zoom. There is a dedicated 64 MP telephoto lens with an aperture of f/3.5 and optical image stabilization (OIS). Huawei states that the module can zoom up to 200x, but doesn’t specify the different levels for optical and digital/hybrid zoom.

As for the rest of the spec sheet, the Huawei P50 Pro sports a 6.6-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2,700 x 1,228 pixels, a refresh rate of 120 Hz, and a touch sampling rate of 300 Hz. The smartphone is equipped with the Snapdragon 888, but without an integrated 5G modem. In terms of battery life, the Huawei P50 Pro has an integrated 4360mAh battery that accepts 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.

The presence of the Snapdragon 888 may have misled you. But no, the Huawei P50 Pro again does not have Google’s mobile services. The EMUI 12 overlay doesn’t integrate native apps that you’re used to from Android, and you’ll have to tinker with APKs and PWAs to replicate a “normal” user experience.

Huawei P50 Pocket: P for Foldable

The Huawei P50 Pocket is a foldable smartphone, so the central element of the data sheet is of course the display. The main display is a 6.9-inch flexible OLED panel with an aspect ratio of 21:9 and a resolution of 2790 x 1188 pixels, a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a touch sampling rate of 300 Hz.

As for the photos, on the back we find the same 40 MP True Chroma main lens and the same 13 MP ultra wide angle lens as found on the Huawei P50 Pro. But there’s a third 32MP Ultra Spectrum Camera lens, a 10-channel multispectral sensor designed to capture more detail. The selfie camera is a 10.7 MP ultra wide-angle lens. But you can also use the main camera module and use the cover screen for selfies.

As for the rest of the spec sheet, the Huawei P50 Pocket sports a Snapdragon 888 SoC with no 5G modem and a 4,000mAh battery that only accepts 40W wired fast charging.

Huawei Watch GT Runner

Huawei has also launched a sporty smartwatch to go with its two new smartphones, the Watch GT Runner. Huawei smartwatches continue to enjoy great popularity and the new model from the GT series is aimed specifically at professional runners.

The manufacturer relies on a slim design, lightweight materials, wearing comfort, precise dynamic monitoring of heart rate and SpO2 based on HUAWEI TruSeenTM 5.0+ and dual-band five-system GNSS for precise geolocation and recording of each user’s run.

The Huawei Watch GT Runner is crafted from a composite fiber material that is said to not only increase durability but also make the GPS more accurate. It also features an ultra-lightweight silicon nitride ceramic bezel and titanium alloy crown.
Overall, the smartwatch weighs only 38.5 g. The case is offered in a uniform size of 46 mm.

Huawei also highlights its “Runners Ability Index” (RAI). This term describes a broad index used to measure a runner’s endurance level and technique efficiency.

In particular, after each training session, the system can calculate the RAI based on the history of heart rate, pace, distance, frequency and other data to accurately rank runners’ skills in real time.

According to Huawei, in a typical usage scenario, the new Watch GT Runner can last up to 14 days in “smart” mode with its 451mAh battery. A value that drops to 8 days with “intensive” use. The smartwatch can be charged via cable or wirelessly (also via reverse wireless charging with a smartphone).
