Huawei shows it to Samsung: Foldables can be that thin

Samsung dominates the foldable smartphone market in terms of sales. However, the competition from China seems to be technically ahead – as Huawei’s Mate X3 shows.

Huawei was once poised to overtake Samsung as the world’s largest smartphone maker, but sales plummeted due to the US embargo. The fact that the company’s products are still absolutely world class is now evident at the first major launch event in Germany in years.

Huawei is presenting its new top smartphone P60 Pro in Munich. It is already considered by experts to be one of the best camera phones in the world and was also able to impress us in the test. Incidentally, the Huawei Mate X3 also celebrated its market launch outside of China. The Mate X3 is a foldable smartphone in the style of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 – with one visible difference: the size.

Despite comparable screen diagonals, the Mate X3 is far more compact. When unfolded, it is almost 1 millimeter thinner than the Samsung cell phone at 5.3 millimeters, and when folded it is even up to 3 millimeters. In a direct comparison with the P60 Pro, it is hardly noticeable that it is a foldable device. It remains to be seen whether Samsung will react in the fall and present a similarly thin foldable with the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
