Hummels is missing for weeks
For Reyna, the season at BVB is over

The tears came quickly, now it is bitter certainty for Gio Reyna: The 19-year-old will not play for Borussia Dortmund again this season. Again he sustained a serious injury to his thigh. He’s not the only one missing.

Only 53 seconds had been played in the constant rain in Stuttgart when bitter tears welled up in Gio Reyna’s eyes. The working day was already over for the unlucky Dortmunder, he suffered a muscle and tendon injury. The season ended prematurely for the American, BVB announced.

Reyna had returned to the squad just four games earlier after a protracted injury. Overall, the 19-year-old only played 13 competitive games this season.

“Gio is exhausted, that’s incredibly bitter,” coach Marco Rose said on Friday – and Reyna’s injury is by no means an isolated case. Despite the redeeming 2-0 (1-0) win at VfB Stuttgart, the mood at BVB was depressed. Defense chief Mats Hummels will also not be available to BVB for several weeks due to a muscle injury in his thigh.

Midfielder Mo Dahoud suffered a shoulder injury and will undergo further tests in the coming days. Dutch international Donyell Malen is also plagued by a strained tendon and was unable to play for VfB.

“Everyone at the club is worried. We had to replace an injured player in every exchange slot today,” said Rose on Friday. Superstar Erling Haaland is not yet at 100 percent after his foot injury – BVB is on the gums in the final sprint of the season.

Rose still had warm words for his bitterly disappointed young star Reyna in cold and wet Stuttgart. “We will get him stable and fit. He will become a world-class player and make his way with us,” confirmed the coach.
