Hummer EV is delivered: 1000 PS & drives diagonally

The lobster is back. As a thoroughbred electric car colossus with almost 1,000 hp and almost 15,600 Newton meters of torque. The all-wheel drive monster even drives diagonally through the terrain. The first customers are now receiving the electric Hummer.

General Motors has started delivering the fully electric Hummer to customers. The first copies delivered listen to the model name “Hummer EV Edition 1” and should have a theoretical range of just under 530 kilometers with one battery charge.

If you wanted to treat yourself to one of the first electric lobsters, you had to dig deep into your wallet: Prices started at $ 110,295, but Edition 1 is now sold out. But you also get 1000 horsepower and the theoretical range of almost 530 kilometers, as well as the technical curiosity that you can drive the electric Hummer at slow speed diagonally – so like a crab walks. To do this, the Hummer swings the front and rear wheels in the same direction. Tesla wants to copy that for its cybertruck.

If, on the other hand, you have to cross high rocks or drive through a deep stream, then you can raise the Hummer’s landing gear by over 15 cm. The “Hummer EV Edition 1” models do not yet have this function when they are delivered, but General Motors wants to deliver this via a software update.

After the sale of Edition 1, General Motors will sell other different versions of its electric Hummer with different ranges and optionally with 2 or 3 electric motors, you can find out more here from the manufacturer.
Update end

Beginning of the original announcement from 2020

The first electric Hummer from General Motors is said to have a range of around 350 US miles, which would be just under 563 kilometers, as The Verge reports. The automobile monster “Hummer EV” is powered by a maximum of three electric motors. With the three engines, the Hummer creates around 1000 hp and an estimated 11,500 pound-feet of torque, that’s around 15,591 Nm. The electronic control system distributes this power variably to the two axes. General Motors is installing its new modular electric platform “Ultium” for the first time in the Hummer EV.

The Hummer EV can drive diagonally, this function is called “Crab Mode” (since crabs are known to walk sideways). Similar to the Vision AVTR from Mercedes-Benz. But unlike the Mercedes, the new Hummer is not a study (which will probably never be built), but is ready for series production and definitely intended for sale.

The crab mode is made possible by the fact that the rear axle can also be steered. So all four wheels can be steered in the same direction. The Hummer can only be driven diagonally at low speeds.

General Motors plans to start production of the e-giant at the end of 2021, and the Hummer EV will be available from 2022. General Motors may even be able to bring its e-Hummer onto the market before the Tesla Cybertruck.

The Hummer EV will be available in four versions. In the fall of 2021, GM plans to introduce the Hummer EV Edition 1 for probably US $ 112,595. With “Crab Mode” and “Extract Mode” for more ground clearance in off-road use. The Hummer EV3X will follow in autumn 2022. With three electric motors that let the Hummer sprint to 97 km / h in three seconds. Price: $ 99,995. Here, however, the “crab mode” is missing, among other things.

GM plans to sell the Hummer EV2X from spring 2023. With “Crab Mode” and “Extract Mode” for $ 89,995, but only with two motors. Finally, the Hummer EV2 will be available from spring 2024 with two engines for 79,995 dollars. And no crab mode.

All four variants – all of them are pickups with a loading area and not closed off-road vehicles – should offer a range of over 563 kilometers.

An “Ultravision System” monitoring system consisting of 18 cameras, including a camera cleaning system, is intended to ensure that the driver always has everything in view. A 13.4-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch screen for the driver dominate the dashboard. Epic Games, from which Fortnite originates, developed the software for the infotainment system. The graphic representation on the screens in the Hummer should be correspondingly realistic.

Additional steel plates on the underside are intended to protect the batteries from damage during off-road use. The battery should be fully charged in less than 40 minutes.

Production is scheduled to begin at the end of 2021, and GM plans to start deliveries shortly thereafter.
