Hyperloop: we thought technology had been abandoned but India is launching with the giant ArcelorMittal

Thanks to a project bringing together several Indian partners, Hyperloop technology will get a second chance.

The closure of the Hyperloop One company, the driving force behind research into this high-speed transportation technology, seemed to definitively scrap the dream once theorized by Elon Musk. But other people still believe it. To find them, you will now have to travel to India, where a new project to develop this magnetic levitation train is being launched.

ArcelorMittal at the helm

It is a well-known name in France which will now carry the hopes of the Hyperloop. The global steel giant ArcelorMittal will indeed collaborate with ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, the start-up TuTr Hyperloop, the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras and teams of students to advance the techniques of this train, which can theoretically go up to 1200 km/h.

This dream collaboration between government, academia and industry has the potential to create efficient, sustainable and affordable mass mobility technology in India and the world. » said TuTr Hyperloop co-founder Aravind S. Bharadwaj.

A demonstrator will emerge in Madras

The partners therefore plan to build a demonstrator on the Thaiyur campus, in the suburbs of the city Madras (Chennai), in the south of the country. According to them, this will be the “ first Hyperloop test infrastructure in the country. » A 400 meter long tube will be built in the coming months, to test capsules that can go up to 200 km/h.

According to the press release provided by the project participants, the demonstrator will be usable “ by the end of the first quarter of 2024 », without the amount of the project being revealed. Transport solutions not only for passengers, but also for goods, will be tested within this study structure.
