Hyundai is said to be considering the launch of an affordable electric city car, which could replace the current i10.
In recent times, city cars have not really had the wind in their sails. In effect, environmental standards and safety requirements have driven up development costs of these cars, which have become less and less profitable. This is why many brands have chosen to leave this segment, including Ford, Citroën and Peugeot.
This could come back in force thanks to the rise of the electric car. We think in particular of the Fiat 500, which has given itself a new lease of life, but the city car could soon have other rivals. Particularly on the side of Hyundai.
An electric city car in the works
Indeed, and according to our colleagues from Automotive News, the Korean brand is thinking about the launch of a brand new electric city car. For the time being, nothing has yet been confirmed, while this new model is still in the discussion stage. Indeed, according to Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Marketing Director of Hyundai Europe, this new arrival in the catalog would take some time to see the light of day in its serial version.
If we still know very little about this hypothetical novelty, this could eventually replace the current Hyundai i10, launched in 2020 and only offered with a combustion engine. This new city car would then play the role of entry-level model and would display a price of around 20,000 euros, according to Andreas-Christoph Hofmann. An amount close to that which would also be requested for the future trendy city car of the Volkswagen group.
An ever-expanding range
But this electric city car, which we should learn a little more about in the coming months, will not be the brand’s only novelty. According to its marketing manager, Hyundai should, in fact, launch no less than 11 new electric models by 2030. For now, and unlike many manufacturers, the Korean firm has not yet announced a deadline by which it would ban heat engines. This will inevitably have to be done before 2035, in accordance with the European Commission’s vote on the ban on the sale of thermal cars.
After launching the Ioniq 5 last year and unveiling the new Ioniq 6 only a few days ago, Hyundai is currently working on the development of its future Ioniq 7. This time it will be a large family SUV which will also be marketed in Europe. According to Automotive News, 100% electric models have represented 16% of the manufacturer’s sales since the start of the year.
