- The US communications provider iBasis has become the victim of a hacker attack.
- Now data processed by it that belongs to Swisscom, Sunrise or Salt could be misused.
- Swisscom and Sunrise are aware of the incident and are checking whether their customers are affected.
“We are aware of a ransomware attack on iBasis,” said Swisscom spokeswoman Sabrina Hubacher on Sunday evening when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency, thereby confirming a report in the daily newspaper “Le Temps”.
Swisscom has no direct business relationship with iBasis, apart from roaming connections through operators who could use iBasis as a carrier for data transmission, Hubacher said. The Swiss provider is in close contact with its partners to check whether and which data of Swisscom customers is affected.
Sunrise expresses itself similarly
The second largest telecommunications company in Switzerland also stated that it would work with iBasis in areas such as international calls. One is still in the process of checking whether customer data is affected, said Rolf Ziebold, spokesman for Sunrise, to SDA. Salt has not yet responded to an inquiry.
According to “Le Temps”, the hacker attack in the USA severely affected Swisscom, Sunrise UPC and Salt. A little-known company to the general public, iBasis provides international services to hundreds of telecom operators around the world.
