Ice Hockey World Championships in Utica – Swiss women only lose 0:3 to record world champions Canada – Sport

  • The Swiss ice hockey women were defeated by the Canadians 0-3 in the second World Cup game in Utica.
  • The first setback occurs after just 70 seconds, the second goal a few minutes later.
  • As a result, the Swiss were able to hold their own until the Empty Netter, especially thanks to keeper Andrea Brändli.

Switzerland and Canada have duel at the Women’s World Cup 12 times so far. The Canadians won 12 times with a goal difference of 87:3. It was not just because of this one-sided history that the roles were clearly assigned before the first puck drop. With Canada, the Swiss faced the reigning Olympic champions and record world champions (12 titles).

But contrary to the clear signs, Switzerland got off extremely lightly with a 3-0 defeat. However, it became clear after a few seconds that it would be difficult to get anything countable: Emma Maltais scored with a rebound after just 70 seconds to make it 1-0.

Swiss degrees too harmless

7 minutes later it was already 2-0 on the scoreboard for the “Maple Leaves”. After a disastrous bad pass in team leader Lara Stalder’s own zone, Sarah Nurse took over the puck and sank it coldly into the high corner.

It took over a quarter of an hour before Naemi Herzig was able to have the Swiss score their first shot on the Canadian goal. But Switzerland’s attempts – in the end there were to be 17 in total – remained at most mandatory tasks for goalkeeper Emerance Maschmeyer.

Brändli strong again

Coach Colin Muller would probably have hoped for more from his players, especially from the four power play opportunities. Shortly after the start of the second period, the Swiss tried unsuccessfully for a minute and a half with two more players on the ice.

The fact that goalkeeper Andrea Brändli made way for a 6th outfield player a few minutes before the end when the score was 0:2 was primarily due to herself. The 26-year-old from Zurich, who had already made 51 saves in the first World Cup game against the USA, had 42 saved shots against Canada. From the bench she saw Sarah Fillier sink the puck into the empty net to make it 3-0 19 seconds before the end of the game.

This is how it continues

The World Cup continues for the Swiss on Monday. Coach Muller’s team then competes against Finland, number 4 in the world rankings behind Switzerland. You can watch the game live on SRF Zwei from 9 p.m.
