Immigration bill: the seduction of LRs in the crosshairs for the executive

The government will soon present a new immigration bill. A subject that has been particularly in the news for forty years. And without an absolute majority, the executive now seeks to seduce the Republicans, to have their text voted on. Stop making concessions.

This is a subject that never ceases to be at the heart of the news: immigration. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin has announced that he will present a new bill on the subject. This is the 21st bill on immigration since 1986 and the Pasqua laws, the equivalent of a bill on this subject every 18 months on average.

seduce the right

But for this new proposal, the executive boasts of its pragmatism around the regularization of illegal immigrants who work in sectors lacking personnel, such as in the restaurant industry for example, and the tightening of the rules for all the others. Clear objective displayed by Emmanuel Macron: to seduce the right. Last Wednesday on France 2, the head of state wanted an alliance with Les Républicains. The President of the Republic therefore chose to occupy the field on this theme of immigration dear to the right-wing party. But given the first reactions, they will however be difficult to convince. “I fear that, ultimately, this text is only a broad alibi to move towards a significant, even massive, regularization of foreigners in an irregular situation”, confides the LR deputy for the Alpes-Maritimes, Eric Ciotti.

Concessions

But, to reassure the LRs, Gérald Darmanin is ready to make concessions, in particular by limiting the number of residence permits for jobs in tension to a few thousand, by establishing quotas. In addition, as part of the orientation and programming bill of the Ministry of the Interior, currently under review, Gérald Darmanin accepted on Wednesday an amendment tabled by Eric Ciotti to increase the number of places in detention centers.

By 2027, 3,000 places should be available in these centers, against only 1,850 today.
