Speaking on the occasion of the start of the parliamentary term, Mohammed VI, who strongly insisted on solidarity and support for the victims of the earthquake, urged his government to accelerate the implementation of major social projects.
The traditional speech delivered by the Cherifian sovereign at the start of the legislative year, which coincides with the holding of the Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank, was marked by the historic presence, alongside the elected representatives of the Nation, of the leaders international financial institutions: Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF, Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group.
Speaking about the earthquake that struck his country a month ago, Mohammed VI insisted on “ the need to continue to provide aid and assistance to affected families, to promptly undertake the upgrading and reconstruction of affected areas, and to provide them with basic services “. A project to which Morocco will allocate 120 billion dirhams (12 billion dollars) over the next 5 years. Emergency aid of 30,000 dirhams (around 2,800 euros) will also be allocated to the households concerned. Note that the operation to allocate the first tranche of financial aid has already started more than a week ago. This first payment is set at 2,500 dirhams per month for one year.
This crisis, the management of which was supervised to the millimeter by the sovereign of Morocco himself, mobilized from the very beginning all the forces of the country to come to the aid of the victims. On the occasion of the parliamentary re-entry, a month later, Mohammed VI saluted “the Royal Armed Forces, the various Security Forces, the government departments and the Territorial Administration for their sacrifices in order to bring relief and assistance to the populations of the affected areas”.
This earthquake, which left nearly 3,000 dead and 6,000 injured, sparked an unprecedented surge of solidarity internationally. Many countries have offered their help to Rabat. The monarch took this opportunity to once again thank “ the brotherly and friendly countries which, in this painful ordeal, showed solidarity and assistance towards the Moroccan people “. Boost to social projects

The contours of this new reform are becoming clearer. According to King Mohammed VI, “ the family being the basic unit of society according to the terms of the Constitution, we always ensure that favorable conditions are created to strengthen its cohesion. “. And to add: “ a healthy society is built on the foundation of a healthy and balanced family. Correlatively, if the family disintegrates, society inevitably loses its compass. “. For Rabat, preserving family cohesion also involves extending social coverage to all Moroccans. After a first step linked to the expansion of compulsory health insurance to 22 million new beneficiaries, Morocco is now moving on to the generalization of family allowances targeting 7 million children of school age.
This system, which will be gradually operationalized before the end of 2022, will have a direct impact on targeted families and will raise their standard of living. This program should change the economic situation of many Moroccans, in particular the 3.2 million citizens who fell into poverty between 2014 and 2022, according to the Moroccan High Commission for Planning (HCP).
Good news was also announced by Mohammed VI: “certain needy sections of society” will also benefit from this program. In detail, this concerns children of school age, those with disabilities, newborns, poor families and those in precarious situations, without children of school age, and more particularly households caring for people elderly.
In this wake, the King of Morocco emphasized the importance of digitalization to bring this project to fruition, in particular by linking it to the targeting system of the Unified Social Register (RSU) in order to guarantee “strict compliance with the principles solidarity, transparency and fairness in the allocation of aid, particularly for the benefit of those who deserve it.” Enough to illustrate the desire of Mohammed VI to complete the project of social equity and the fight against poverty.
