The Xiaomi 12S Ultra has passed a test protocol in the DXOMARK laboratories, and the smartphone is doing very well.
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra was launched last July in China, and it was feared that it would never be available in France. But the brand recently let it be known that the smartphone would be well marketed in international markets, and therefore probably here.
The Xiaomi 12S Ultra does better than the iPhone 13 Pro in photos
While waiting for its release in our region, DXOMARK has tested the smartphone’s camera to test its quality against competition from the premium mobile segment. And the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is doing very well, since it obtains a score of 138.
Thanks to this note, it takes fifth place in the ranking of the best photophones, behind the Honor Magic4 Ultimate, the Huawei P50 Pro, the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra and the Huawei Mate 40 Pro +. If we can be slightly disappointed to see that the Xiaomi 12S Ultra does less well than the Mi 11 Ultra, released more than a year ago, the brand can be satisfied to be ahead of behemoths like the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, or the Pixel 6 Pro.
Quality hardware, but the software part is not infallible
DXOMARK appreciates the general performance of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra in photos, which highlights the partnership with Leica to develop the optics of this device. Here are the strong points retained by the experts for this product:
- Excellent overall image quality for most use cases;
- Particularly good performance on the rendering of
colors and details; - Excellent night photographic performance, with a very wide dynamic range, which makes it an ideal tool for nighttime urban landscapes;
- Excellent performance of ultra-wide lenses and zoom at all distances, especially at long distances, thanks to its dedicated telephoto lens;
- High-level video quality: wide dynamic range, natural rendering of textures and good exposure;
- Versatile camera that offers two different image signatures, user selectable, resulting in similar image quality.
DXOMARK still notes points for improvement that prevent the Xiaomi 12S Ultra from being the best in its category. He is particularly criticized for the impossibility of capturing the moment in low light and very contrasting scenes compared to other flagship devices in the ultra-premium segment. He is also accused of a certain ” lack of image reliability and consistency, leading to discrepancies, sometimes even between consecutive shots, photos and videos not showing the same results “.
Finally, the preview does not correspond exactly to the final rendering, regret the test, with an HDR not applied to the preview and a bokeh effect different from the real capture.
