For Stan Wawrinka, the ATP 500 tournament in Rotterdam ends in the quarterfinals. The Lausanne native is clearly subject to Jannik Sinner.

Stan Wawrinka (ATP 130) missed the semifinals in Rotterdam. The 37-year-old from Vaud improved against Jannik Sinner (ATP 14) after losing the starting set. Nevertheless, after 1:12 hours he clearly lost to the young South Tyrolean with 1:6, 3:6.

After Wawrinka had only been able to win one game in the first set, he kept up better with his 21-year-old opponent in the second round – at least in phases. The Swiss had trouble with Sinner’s speed increases as well as with his network advances.

Return to top 100 will have to wait

For Wawrinka, reaching the semi-finals in Rotterdam would have been tantamount to returning to the top 100 in the world rankings. Although he is approaching it thanks to the two victories against Alexander Bublik and Richard Gasquet, he will not crack it yet.
