Cottesmore School, in England, made a radical choice for the education of its students. Now the head teacher is an artificial intelligence. Management argues that this change will help teaching staff to spend more time with children, in addition to giving them the keys to better interact with them.

While AI is becoming more and more present in our daily lives, it is still time to question the changes – and their benefits – on many aspects of our lives. Starting with education. Earlier this year, several schools began banning ChatGPT, while teachers refused to correct papers written by the chatbot.
Meanwhile, another school has taken the opposite path. At Cottesmore School in England, we would rather embrace AI than distrust it. This year, the school decided that its main teacher would be an artificial intelligence, called ABI. ABI’s role is to provide “leadership and a plan of thoughts”, assisting the rest of the teaching staff in their tasks, while providing advice on how they interact with students.

According to the school, ABI is a great way for teachers to spend more time with students, while improving the quality of their interactions. Initially, Cottesmore School even wanted ABI to have a human appearance, even giving her the initial name Abigail Bailey, capable of responding with facial animations. A project ultimately abandoned by the council, which is no less proud of the results of its AI.
So much so that the school plans to continue experiments in the field. Indeed, a new chatbot is currently in preparation, the objective of which will be to assist teachers in the creation of educational materials. The board did not specify when this AI will be available to faculty. It should be noted, however, that the year at Cottesmore School costs parents around 32,500 euros.
