Independent Spirit Awards: Renée Zellweger and Adam Sandler win main prizes

The day before the big Academy Awards, the best indie films are traditionally chosen on the beach in Santa Monica, Los Angeles. At this year's Independent Spirit Awards, Oscar candidate Renée Zellweger (50) won the award for Best Actress for her role in the Judy Garland biopic "Judy". As a male counterpart, comedian Adam Sandler (53) triumphed for his part in the crime comedy "The Black Diamond". Sandler himself, however, has not been nominated for an Oscar.

The tragic comedy "The Farewell" with rapper and actress Awkwafina (31) in the leading role was awarded as the best film. This is surprising in that "The Farewell" was not included in the Oscar nominations, but in previous years films like "Birdman" or "12 Years a Slave" often won an indie award, which one day later cleared away at the Oscars.

"Parasite" was awarded as the Best International Film. The Korean production, on the other hand, is also in the Oscar race for Best International Film and is also a favorite there. The Independent Spirit Award only considers film productions that cost no more than $ 22.5 million.
