The Indiana Jones film series currently consists of four films and Indiana Jones 5 is poised for a theatrical release in 2023. While the first three Indiana Jones films, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Death” and “The Last Crusade” are all considered masterpieces, “The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” is spurned…wrongly?
Even if “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” clearly falls apart in comparison to its predecessor films, the film is not as bad as it is often made out to be. Instead, the film actually saved the franchise and opened up new perspectives for the fifth installment.
Indiana Jones: Infinite Possibilities Through Science Fiction
One of the most controversial points in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is its use of the science fiction genre. While the first three films all dealt with fantastical elements, mythical legends and spiritual religions, the inclusion of aliens in an “Indiana Jones” film was too much for many fans.
Granted, fantasy and sci-fi are different genres, but they play similar tones. As controversial as the appearance of aliens was, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opens numerous doors for Indiana Jones 5 by introducing sci-fi elements.
Of course, the franchise doesn’t have to go back to aliens and UFOs, but at least a bit of science fiction wouldn’t bother many fans. Also, the genre fits the legacy of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas who created Indiana Jones.
With “Star Wars” George Lucas successfully combined sci-fi and fantasy and created one of the most important sci-fi franchises. Spielberg left his mark on the genre with ET, Jurassic Park and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
