Influencer dies during armpit sweating operation

Drama in Mexico, a young sports influencer died in the middle of surgery performed in a clinic with which she was doing an Instagram partnership.

Bodybuilding enthusiast Odalis Santos Mena, only 23, died of cardiac arrest moments after being anesthetized. She had presented the same day for a non-invasive procedure on her armpits to stop the sweating.

With 153,000 followers on Instagram, the bodybuilder is very popular and had been contacted by the SkinPiel clinic in the city of Guadalajara in Mexico for a partnership. In exchange for a free intervention, she was to promote the miraDry method. Approved by the national agency for the safety of medicines and local health products, this operation aims to eliminate the sweat glands, responsible for sweat, by using thermal energy.

A free operation against advertising on social networks

On July 7, 2021, Odalis therefore goes to this partner clinic to undergo this operation, which lasts one hour. Local anesthesia must be performed in the armpits, before the doctor in charge transfers a temporary tattoo to the skin and uses a suction machine that brings the skin and glands to the surface, before removing them with heat.

However, according to the English newspaper The Mirror, the treatment of the young woman would have been administered by people without any medical competence. The victim was also reportedly anesthetized by an employee with no training in anesthesiologist. Asked by the local press, the family of the deceased accuses the clinic of “negligence”.

Forensic scientists who studied the body concluded that the death was related to the mixing of the numbing product with a high dose of steroids. Odalis’ boyfriend denies this diagnosis and claims that the victim was not taking any treatment.

The death of the influencer mocked online …

For Insider, Victor Manuel Gómez Correño claims that his girlfriend had made Instagram stories to promote the clinic and this procedure just before entering the treatment room. So that Internet users would have fun leaving messages “mocking and insulting” on the social networks of the deceased. Her boyfriend would have been forced to remove the ability to leave comments. Insider could see several hateful and misogynistic messages shared on the victim’s TikTok account.

According to Victor, the clinic is currently the target of a malpractice investigation because it did not have a defibrillator at the time of the facts. According to information from The Mirror, the local police are also said to have launched an investigation to better understand the circumstances of the tragedy.

Proof that the influence market for selling cosmetic surgery or medicine is much more dangerous than we think. The last thing Odalis fans will have seen on her account before her disappearance will be publicity for the clinic where she lost her life.
