A battle has opened between Instagram users and the platform. The social network has been trying to change its formula for several years now in order to improve the experience of Internet users, without much success. But the latest update has set fire to the powder since a petition has been launched to protest against the latest changes to the application. Behind this project, the photographer Tati Bruening, whose publication was shared by two pillars of the social network, the sisters Kim and Kylie Jenner, each weighing respectively 326 and 360 million subscribers.

In order to calm things down and defend his choices, Instagram boss Adam Mosseri explained himself through a video posted on his Twitter account on July 26. In it, he addresses three very distinct points, which are the three major changes that cause problems for users.

First, he mentions the full screen format and specifies that it is only a test that does not affect “only a small percentage of people“. According to him “a full-screen experience could be a more fun and engaging experience“. Adam Mosseri admits however that this new feature is not yet ready and will have to be improved before being applied to the rest of the world.

I believe that over time, Instagram will turn more and more towards video

The boss of the social network goes on to the change that has caused the most complaints: the development of videos to the detriment of photos. For the past few days, any video under 15 minutes is published as Real. In addition, the platform’s algorithm increasingly values and favors videos to the detriment of photos, the platform’s original content. If Adam Mosseri affirms “want to continue to support the photos“, because “they are part of our heritage“, it also assumes the transition that takes place: “I believe that over time, Instagram will turn more and more towards video.“He justifies this choice by the behavior of users, which has also changed. If the essence of the platform remains the photo, the videos lead to more and more commitments and become the most liked or shared content on the platform.

Recommendations stronger than complaints

Finally, he concludes by talking about recommendations, a thorny subject which also concerns the other social network of the Meta group, Facebook. These recommendations are strongly criticized because they disturb the follow-up of the publications of the users who sometimes find themselves with a lot of imposed content. If Facebook thinks it has found a solution with its new interface, Instagram is stubborn. For Adam Mosseri, “the idea is to help people discover new and interesting things that they have no idea exist. Therefore, if recommendations that do not interest [l’utilisateur] appear is that we are doing our job badly“. However, he does not intend to go back, because he remains convinced that the recommendations are “the best way to help creators reach more people“.

Adam Mosseri concludes his intervention by admitting that there has been “many changes at once“, but that Instagram will still persevere in the direction that the platform is taking. The competition with TikTok has never been so fierce and Instagram intends to come out of this battle alive.
