Instagramization of WhatsApp is progressing: Messenger is testing Reels in chat

WHATSAPP

WhatsApp is becoming more and more similar to Instagram. After status circles and emoji reactions, reels are now to be introduced into Messenger as an alternative to voice messages.

In recent months, WhatsApp has taken over many features of the photo network Instagram, which also belongs to the meta group – such as the status circles or the option to react to status messages with emojis. Apparently, reels will also be integrated into WhatsApp shortly.

These are short videos that you can share in your story on Instagram. With WhatsApp, on the other hand, you will be able to send them to your contacts in chats. The video messages are intended to be an alternative to voice messages and, according to the WABetaInfo fan site, may only be 60 seconds long. An advantage: Because there are no time restrictions for voice messages.

The function was already spotted in the iOS beta of the messenger in March 2023, and it is now also included in the test version for Android phones. This suggests that WhatsApp is planning to roll out the function to everyone soon via an update.

Incidentally, in October WhatsApp will stop supporting some older smartphones. You can check whether you are affected in the linked article.
