The soap opera of Intel’s new establishment in Europe continues with a “transalpine” episode to complete the German question.
For almost a year now, Intel has been repeating its intention to develop its presence on the Old Continent, benefiting incidentally from the large subsidies granted by theEuropean Chips Act, an investment plan of more than 40 billion euros over ten years.
Intel would invest 80 billion euros over ten years
In August and again in September, Pat Gelsinger had spoken of his intention to build new infrastructure. The CEO of Intel then mentioned an envelope of more than 80 billion euros evoking ” a project […] which would be a catalyst for the semiconductor industry, […] a catalyst for the entire technology sector “.
Very quickly, it was Germany that seemed best placed to host the heart of this project, the new chip manufacturing plant. Several weeks ago, we confirmed this choice with, it seems, the Dresden site which held the rope. It was also a question of setting up an assembly site in Italy.
An assembly plant in Italy
This second point is now confirmed by various sources even if, once again, Intel is careful not to announce the thing publicly. According to information published by Reuters, the discussions would be well advanced between Intel and Italy while one evokes an amount of 4 to 8 billion euros for this factory “of assembly”.
The structure would complement the German factory, although doubts still remain. This new structure would be equivalent to the one Intel plans to set up in Penang, Malaysia. However, this is bad news for France when at the start of 2021, the country seemed rather in a good position.
Today, the latest rumors rather evoke the establishment of a research and development structure in France, the purely industrial part therefore being focused on Germany and / or Italy.
