ChatGPT is now also conquering the car. Mercedes is the first manufacturer to integrate the clever tool into its MBUX multimedia system. However, only for a short time and only for a special clientele.
With the MBUX multimedia system introduced in 2018, Mercedes has raised the possibilities for interaction between driver and vehicle to a high level. But the dialogic communication between humans and Mercedes still offers potential for improvement, as the integration of the ChatGPT chatbot into MBUX shows the integration of ChatGPT into MBUX does not require customers to do much. “Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta program” – the additional software is immediately loaded via the wireless network Internet connection. Instead of researching on Google or going to a tourist information center, you can now ask MBUX: “I want to go swimming at a beach in Carlsbad. Which places can you recommend to me?” Several options are now listed on the infotainment system display, and the information is read out at the same time. A follow-up question about the range of leisure activities at Carlsbad State Beach is also possible. The highlight: this question does not have to be formulated in a cumbersome, long way so that even a stupid system can understand it. Thanks to ChatGPT, it is also understood in the larger context with reference to the previous question, which is why a detailed question can be brief, as in normal interpersonal dialogue. The range of topics that the voice assistant can deal with is also growing. If, for example, a discussion between the passengers about a historical topic develops in the car, ChatGPT can help to fill open gaps with well-founded Internet knowledge. “Why did the Roman Empire fail?” A short time later comes an answer that could well serve as the basis for a student essay. The basis for the integration of ChatGPT is a cooperation between Mercedes and Microsoft. Via the Azure OpenAI Service, the car manufacturer uses the AI models from OpenAI with corresponding security and data protection functions from Azure. Mercedes retains sovereignty over IT processes. In the beta phase that has now started, Mercedes wants to anonymously store and analyze the voice inputs of users in the cloud. Findings should help to further develop voice control and to integrate it into the strategy for introducing a large language model in other markets/languages.
